General Information

In order to obtain a certified copy of a vital record, you may either come into our office at 117 Dick Street, Fayetteville, N.C. or obtain a copy by mail. Send your information with check or money order in the correct amount to:

Fees for certified copies are $10.00 each and uncertified copies are $.25 each. Your request will be processed within three working days upon receipt.


NOTE: YOUR REQUEST WILL NOT BE PROCESSED WITHOUT A SIGNATURE; THEREFORE, WE CANNOT ACCEPT REQUESTS BY E-MAIL.

Under North Carolina Law (G.S. 130A-26A), it is a felony violation to fraudulently request a certified copy of a vital record or obtain, possess, sell, furnish, use, or attempt to use for any purpose of deception a North Carolina birth certificate.

North Carolina General Statute 130A-93© specifies who is entitled to obtain a certified copy as follows:

• Yourself
• Current Spouse
• Brother/Sister
• Child
• Parent
• Grandparent
• Authorized agent, attorney, or legal representative

 

Please include the following information with your request, along with your signature:

BIRTH CERTIFICATE  

• Full Name on Certificate
• Date of Birth
• Mother's Full Maiden Name
• Father's Full Name
• Your Relationship to the Person whose Certificate is Requested
• Your Signature

DEATH CERTIFICATE  

• Full Name of Deceased
• Date of Death
• Place of Death (City or County)
• Date of Birth
• Relationship to the Person whose Certificate is Requested
• Your Signature

MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE  

• Full Name of Groom
• Full Maiden Name of Bride
• Date of Marriage
• Place Where License was Issued (City or County)
• Your Relationship to the Person whose Certificate is Requested
• Your Signature

North Carolina Vital Records

If a birth, death, or marriage occurred in North Carolina, but not Cumberland County you may contact the county in which it occurred or you may contact the state of North Carolina Vital Records Unit.  N.C. Vital Records registers all births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages and divorces that occur within the state.  Their process involves a statewide system of vital events that have been registered.  You may request a certified or uncertified copy from Raleigh, however, their fees and time frame vary from the local Register of Deeds offices.  To contact North Carolina Vital Records, you may click here http://vitalrecords.dhhs.state.nc.us/vr/index.html
